Motown’s original soul diva Martha Reeves says Coventry will be the “icing on the cake” as she gets ready to showcase some of her greatest hits on Saturday night.

Best known for hits ‘Dancing on the Streets’ and ‘Heatwave’, Detroit natives Martha Reeves and the Vandellas will be performing at Rialto Reborn on Saturday, March 10.

With a career that spans more than 60 years, the lead vocalist for the iconic Motown group has been performing in the UK since 1962 and admits that she has always been ‘very fond of the UK’.

She said: “I love to perform anywhere where there is family, where there is friends, and where there are people who love to enjoy Motown music. Those are the people who have kept us going for 65 years.

“I’ve got some fabulous people who focus on making the live music sound like the record. When I go out there, we have great jazz musicians who make our music into something special for our live performances.

“We will be singing the same old songs, because they’re my favourites, plus some new songs.

“I always get butterflies before going on stage because you can never know what to expect.

“Everything is always new but the songs always remain the same, the songs have a new meaning wherever you go.”

With plans to keep recording music for as long as possible, Martha believes that music is all about happiness.

“The joy and thrills of life come from music. I love doing what I do- it’s a pleasure. My holiday is on stage,” added Martha.

“Our music is all about love. A good audience makes me do overtime and when the audience inspires me I tend to go overboard- if we’re into the groove of the music I don’t watch the clock.”

Martha Reeves and the Vandellas will be joined on stage by a support act, who is yet to be confirmed, and a live DJ will continue the party until 2am.

The event is being promoted by Coventry-based Showtime Promotions, which is also behind the Stepback 90s concert to the Ricoh Arena on October 13.

Doors open at Rialto Reborn on Saturday, March 10 from 7.30pm.
